Ecology UK: Only known in the North Downs in Kent, where it can be locally abundant, plus 2 sites in Oxfordshire and new site in Hampshire. Come to the Cévennes, where it can be readily found France: Woodland and limestone hillsides, in almost all France and Corsica.
Distribution outside of France: central and southern Europe; Asia Minor, Caucasus.
Fleurs : d'un pourpre foncé ponctué de rouge, assez grandes, en gros épi ovale ou oblong ; bractées bien plus courtes que l'ovaire ; divisions du périanthe conniventes en casque courtement ovoïde-aigu, soudées intérieurement ; labelle tripartit, à lobes latéraux linéaires-oblongs, rapprochés du moyen ; celui-ci grand, dilaté de la base au sommet, à 2 lobules peu ou point divergents, crénelés, 4-6 fois plus larges que les lobes latéraux ; éperon 1-2 fois plus court que l'ovaire.

Flowers: dark purple punctuated with red, quite large, large oval or oblong spur; bracts much shorter than the ovary; divisions of the perianth connivent, forming a hood that is ovoid and a little acute, welded internally; labellum tripartite, lateral lobes linear-oblong, close to the large central lobe, which is dilated from the base to the tip, with 2 lobules little or not divergent, crenelated, 4-6 times wider than the side lobes; spur 1-2 times shorter than the ovary.
